Washington Nationals Futures Bets: 2021 Team & Player Props

Player Props & Futures

2021 NL MVP

  • Juan Soto (+850)

Juan Soto really elevated his game to new heights last season, slashing .351/.490/.695 with 13 home runs and six stolen bases in 196 plate appearances. He put up a 201 wRC+ (1st) with 90th-percentile exit velocity. Soto increased his walk rate to 20.9 percent while cutting his strikeout rate to 14.3 percent. This is an ascending player who might be the best hitter in baseball right now.

Soto hits in a strong lineup, so the counting stats will be there to help earn MVP votes. If the Nationals are able to make the playoffs, there’s a great chance that he’ll be one of the leading candidates for the award. Soto is tied with Mookie Betts as the favorite, but the value is still there at +850.

NL Cy Young

  • Max Scherzer (+800)

Max Scherzer enters his age-37 season in a contract year, coming off one of the worst seasons of his career. That sounds like the perfect storm for a bounce-back. Scherzer’s stuff showed no signs of decline last year, as he still put up a strong swinging-strike rate (14.7%) and his fastball velocity remained at 94 MPH. This is a pitcher with no concerns with volume, as the Nationals will lean on their ace to carry their pitching staff.

Scherzer currently ranks second behind Jacob deGrom for NL Cy Young. When looking at the starting pitchers in the NL, it appears that deGrom and Aaron Nola are his only real threats for the award. Blake Snell and Yu Darvish will have to transition to new teams. Walker Buehler will likely be limited with his innings, and Luis Castillo pitches for the rebuilding Reds. It’s hard not to bet on the Mad Max bounce-back.
